Born to Learn
by Mike Scogna

We are born to learn. From the time we emerge from the womb and learn how to breathe on our own until we are six our focus is learning as our neurological systems develop.  We wake each day passionate and excited about tackling the new, learning and growing.

What are little kids like as they learn? Before they can talk they are watching every move we make and trying to copy and understand what we do.  When they begin to talk they ask questions about everything. What is this? How does it work? They want to try it and do it themselves. And when they do it themselves what happens? They beam and glow like the sun rising.  They say, "I did it! Look I did it!" They are so happy to be learning. They take great joy in the process and progression of achievement. They will try and try and wrestle with something new until they "get it".

I remember as a kid of six trying to make a paper airplane. I tried and tried and tried until I got it right. As soon as I "did it myself" I spent the afternoon making 100 paper airplanes, turning our basement into an aerodrome so I wouldn't forget how to build a paper airplane.  For over a week I told and showed everyone how to make a paper airplane.

Remember learning to tie your shoes, write your name, read and countless other complicated feats that we now don't consciously think about? Well, think about it--you had to learn to chew and swallow and how to keep your diaper dry--you had to learn to do EVERYTHING. You were excited about trying and learning everything new.

Do you continue to learn and challenge yourself? To mentally jump higher and run faster? A basic law of the universe states that everything is moving: toward integration, creation and progression or disintegration destruction, and decay.

What are you creating?

What are you spending your time on? How is it helping you?

What do you want to change and what do you need to learn?

Keep alive the spirit of your natural born learner. Commit to living a life of continual learning and joy in discovery and doing.
